‘‘Painting is not a reconstruction of objective reality, but the artist has to create something that never existed before.’’

Mohsen Vaziri Moghaddam (b.1924 – 2018. Iranian - Italian) is acknowledged as a pioneer of Iranian Abstractionism and leading figure in the development of contemporary Iranian art. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome.

As an educator, his contribution to contemporary Iranian art is unmatched, particularly through his iconic books, Drawing Method vol. 1 (1974) and Drawing Method vol. 2 (1981) which have become standard texts.

During his lifetime, Vaziri was the subject of numerous exhibitions internationally; he exhibited extensively at the Venice Biennial and was collected by MoMA NY.

He is widely recognized for works spanning 5 decades; from the painterly abstracts of the 1960s to the hard-edged geometry of the sculpted and painted aluminium wall reliefs of his later years.

Vaziri’s work is characterised by a restless experimentation of form through materials; deployed in his drawings, sand paintings, painted aluminium wall reliefs, opto-kinetic and interactive sculptures. These seductive works constantly play with the tactile tension between malleable and hard materials, painted versus polished surfaces and machine versus manmade.

When in 1963 Mohsen decided to return to his native country, after spending 10 years in Italy, he took with him a wealth of cultural and personal experiences.

In 1959 he had undertook his unique artistic research creating his sand works and the experimenting carried on until 1963. In that period, he took part in the main national and international artistic events, from the Venice, Sao Paulo and Tehran Biennales, to solo and collective exhibitions in Europe and America, presenting those works and obtaining important accolades from international critics.

The Fondazione Mohsen Vaziri Moghaddam announces that certificates of authenticity will be issued to all those who own works by the artist.

The FMVM is planning to print the most comprehensive monographic catalogue of the artist's works, tracing his long and multifaceted career. The authenticated works, subject to the consent of the legitimate owner, may be selected for the publication of the catalogue, which will take place in Europe.
